Fund Against Censorship Helps Journalists Under Siege

The innovative Fund Against Censorship, administered by the World Press Freedom Committee in cooperation with eight other organizations, provides assistance grants to news media and journalists facing criminal prosecution.  Grants go primarily to hire local lawyers, helping to assure fair trials in criminal libel, defamation and other cases, often politically motivated and intended to silence independent news media.

The Fund operates on the belief of all its participants that journalists should never be jailed for their work. We subscribe to the principles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights Article 19:

“Everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression; this right includes freedom to hold opinions without interference and to seek, receive and impart information and ideas through any media and regardless of frontiers.”

Journalists and news media facing legal charges can seek help through the Fund by contacting any of the nine participating press freedom groups. In addition to WPFC, these are: the Committee to Protect Journalists, Commonwealth Press Union, Inter American Press Association, International Association of Broadcasting, International Federation of the Periodical Press, North American Broadcasters Association, International Press Institute and the World Association of Newspapers.
