Affiliates
The WPFC's 45 affiliates on six continents provides a large global network of
organizations joined in common effort to support press freedom in international
forums and other places where it faces challenges. Affiliates include:
American Society of Newspaper Editors
- ASNE is a membership organization of 750 daily newspaper editors, people
who serve the editorial needs of daily newspapers and certain
distinguished individuals who have worked on behalf of editors through
the years.
American Women in Radio and Television
- AWRT is a national, non-profit organization of professionals in the electronic media
and allied fields. AWRT’s mission is to advance the impact of women in
the electronic media and allied fields by educating, advocating and
acting as a resource to its members and the industry.
Asia-Pacific Institute for Broadcasting Development
- AIBD is a regional inter-governmental organization
servicing electronic media, especially through training programs, in
countries of Asia and the Pacific.
Asociación de Diarios Colombianos (Andiarios)
Asociación de Editores de Diarios Españoles
- AEDE (Association of Spanish Newspaper Editors) was organized in 1978
and is active in the promotion, representation and business and
professional defense of the editors of the daily press.
Asociación de Entidades Periodísticas Argentinas
- ADEPA is a press freedom organization that joins Argentine newspapers, magazines
and journals in common endeavors.
Association of Hungarian Journalists - The largest
professional organization in Hungary safeguarding interests of the press,
representing some 80-85 percent of journalists working in the areas
of the printed and electronic press and news agencies.
Associated Press Broadcasters - The AP Broadcasters is
a U.S. membership group joining numerous radio, television and other
electronic media and broadcasters using AP-provided content in their
daily operations.
Associated Press Managing Editors
- APME is an association of U.S. and Canadian editors
whose newspapers are members of The Associated Press. Since 1933, they
have been dedicated to the improvement, advancement and promotion of
journalism by their own newspapers and through their relationship with
the AP.
Association for Women in Communications
- AWC champions the
advancement of women across all communications disciplines by
recognizing excellence, promoting leadership and positioning its members
at the forefront of the evolving communications era.
Bloque de Prensa-Venezuela
- The organization provides a united voice for Venezuelan publishers and
others on press freedom, professional and other concerns.
Brazilian Newspaper Association
- Since its inception, ANJ has been promoting important newspaper
industry causes, such as freedom of expression, professional ethics and
technical development.
Canadian Newspaper Association
- CNA is the voice of
Canada’s daily newspaper industry. It promotes the positive reputation
of newspapers as an essential medium that benefits all Canadians, and as
an effective vehicle for advertisers.
Central and Eastern European Media Centre-Warsaw - The
center was among the first institutions created following the end of the
Cold War to promote press freedom and training for journalists from
countries of the former Soviet Union.
Committee to Protect Journalists
- CPJ is an independent, nonprofit organization founded in
1981 that promotes press freedom worldwide by defending the rights of
journalists to report the news without fear of reprisal.
Commonwealth Press Union
- CPU is an association whose members are newspaper
groups (some with several hundred newspapers), newspapers and news
agencies in 49 countries of the Commonwealth.
Czech Publishers Association
- UVDT supports the business independence of publishers and the development of
the principles of press freedom.
Federation of Australian Radio Broadcasters - FARB is
the national industry body representing the interests of Australian
commercial radio broadcasters. It provides a forum for discussion of
industry matters and acts as a political advocate on behalf of the
industry.
Freedom Forum
- The Freedom Forum, based in Arlington, Va., is a
nonpartisan foundation dedicated to free press, free speech and free
spirit for all people. The foundation focuses on three priorities: the
Newseum, the First Amendment and newsroom diversity.
Freedom House
- Freedom House is a non-profit, nonpartisan
organization, providing a strong voice for democracy and freedom around the
world through international programs and publications.
Glasnost Defense Foundation - The Glasnost Defense
Fund was founded in 1991 to defend the rights of journalists and to
advocate freedom of the press throughout the territory of the former
Soviet Union. The scope of their work includes large-scale projects and
research as well as individual casework on violations of journalists’
rights.
Hong Kong Journalists Association
- HKJA is run by working journalists to improve the working environment for the men and women who
gather the news in Hong Kong.
Inter American Press Association
- IAPA is a non-profit organization of 1,300 newspapers
and magazines, dedicated to
defending freedom of expression and of the press throughout the
Americas.
International Association of Broadcasting
- IAB was founded in 1946 as the Inter-American
Association of Broadcasting. Its purpose is to consolidate principles of
free expression, contribute to the cultural improvement of society and
to defend the interests of private broadcasters.
International Press Institute
- IPI is a global network of approximately 2,000 editors, media executives
and leading journalists from over 120 countries, whose primary purpose is the promotion and
defense of press freedom in individual countries and worldwide.
International Women's Media Foundation
- The mission of IWMF, headquartered in Washington, DC, is to strengthen the role of women in
the news media around the world, based on the belief that no press is
truly free unless women share an equal voice.
National Association of Broadcasters
- NAB is a full-service trade association which
represents the interests of free, over-the-air U.S. radio and television
broadcasters.
National Conference of Editorial Writers
- Founded in 1947, the NCEW is a nonprofit professional
organization that exists to improve the quality of editorial pages and
broadcast editorials, and to promote high standards among opinion
writers and editors.
National Federation of Press Women
- NFPW is a nationwide organization of
professional women -- and men -- working across the
communications spectrum.
National Newspaper Association
- Established in 1885, the NNA is the national voice of
community newspapers. NNA represents owners, publishers, and editors of
America’s community newspapers and with over 2,500 newspaper members.
National Press Club of Canada
- Founded in 1928 the NPC membership includes news media workers and
news makers involved in the collection, dissemination and consumption of
news from Canada’s capitol Ottawa. The NPC welcomes visitors to its
lounges and the many newsmaker speakers’ breakfasts/lunches and panel
discussions which provide rich occasions for the exchange of ideas and
making contacts. The Club’s prime objective is the promotion and support
of Press Freedom and Freedom of Information nationally and
internationally.
Netherlands Association of Newspaper Editors - The
organization joins leading editorial personnel of Dutch print journalism
in the Netherlands.
Newspaper Association of America
- NAA is the major organization representing the $55
billion U.S. daily newspaper industry. NAA members account for nearly 90 percent of
the daily circulation in the United States and a wide range of nondaily
U.S. newspapers.
The Newspaper Guild-CWA
- The Guild is a media union whose members are diverse in their
occupations, but who share the view that the best working conditions are
achieved by people who have a say in their workplace.
Nihon Shinbun Kyokai
- NSK (The Japan Newspaper & Editors Association) is an independent organization representing some 150 daily
Japanese newspapers, news
agencies and broadcasters.
North American Broadcasters Association
- NABA is a non-profit union of broadcasting
organizations in Canada, the U.S. and Mexico, committed to advancing the
interests of broadcasters at home and internationally.
Organisation Camerounaise pour la Liberte de la Presse (OCALIP)
- Seeks to provide a strong voice for press freedom on behalf of the
journalists of Cameroon.
Overseas Press Club of America
- OPC was founded in 1939 in New York City by a group of
foreign correspondents, seeks to maintain an international association
of journalists working in the United States and abroad; to encourage the
highest standards of professional integrity and skill in the reporting
of news; to help educate a new generation of journalists; to contribute
to the freedom and independence of journalists and the press throughout
the world, and to work toward better communication and understanding
among people.
Pacific Islands News Association
- PINA is the main
professional association of the Pacific Islands news media. It links
radio and TV stations, newspapers, magazines, online services, national
associations of news media practitioners and journalism school in 23
Pacific Island countries and territories.
Pakistan Press Foundation
- PPF is an independent media research, documentation
and training centre working to promote and defend freedom of press.
Press Foundation of Asia - PFA headquartered in
Manila, carries out editorial
programs to instill in journalists a new value system and a sense of
mission appropriate to today’s conditions in Asia.
Radio-Television News Directors Association
- RTNDA headquartered in Washington, D.C., represents local and
network news executives in broadcasting, cable and other electronic
media in more than 30 countries.
Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press
- RCFP was created in 1970 at a time when the nation’s
news media faced a wave of government subpoenas asking reporters to name
confidential sources.
Sociedad Dominicana de Diarios - The organization
represents leading editors and publishers of news media in the Dominican
Republic.
Society of Professional Journalists
- SPJ is the nation’s most broad-based journalism organization,
dedicated to encouraging the free practice of journalism and stimulating
high standards of ethical behavior.
