An analyst says, to Washington's dismay, Syrian populations living amongst armed rebel occupation are banning together to drive out the occupiers. In the background of this a video has surfaced online showing civilians, loyal to the Syrian government, being killed by western-backed rebels and in one case being buried alive. Observers say the Syrian people are fully aware now that Western and Arab Gulf country death squads and armed forces do not plan to bring any type of democracy or freedom to the country and the vast majority of the population have rallied behind President Assad. At the same time, rebel forces have not been able to secure and hold any provincial towns inside Syria, only small areas of occupation, and all reports indicate the Syrian government army has decimated rebel group numbers and that there is now a confident call by the government for Syrian families that have been displaced to return home. Press TV has interviewed author and historian Dr. Webster Griffin Tarpley to further discuss the issue. 03/05/2007 - Political bloggers may share the media landscape with journalists but they don't necessarily inhabit the same space -- they live in an unregulated twilight zone where anything goes. Join us as we discuss the role of blogging on World Press Freedom Day, weighing up whether political blogs are the only platform for meaningful critical discourse or whether they are digital narcissism, insular and error-ridden. Egyptian blogger Abdel Karim Suleiman recently became the first blogger to be jailed in Egypt for insulting Islam and Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak making it clear that oppressive governments now monitor the web vigorously. To date 60 "cyber dissidents" have been jailed, the majority of them in China according to a survey by Reporters Without Borders. According to the PEW Internet & American Life Project only 34 percent of bloggers consider themselves journalists and 55 percent of them operate anonymously. Very few them bother with such niceties as fact-checking. So what is the role of blogging? Is it the voice of the future? Are bloggers filling in the gaps the mainstream media cannot address? And is anybody paying attention to what is being said? Ben Hammersley is a photojournalist and the former multimedia reporter for the Guardian. Between 2004 and 2006, he built and maintained the weblogs of The Guardian, including Comment is free. Kevin Marsh is the editor of the BBC College of Journalism. Prior to that he was the editor of BBC's Today programme ... |

01/20/2013 mega.co.nz A defiant Kim Dotcom vowed to win his upcoming extradition hearing during the Sunday night launch party for his new project, Mega. Dotcom, the founder of the now defunct file-storage site Megaupload, held a press conference Sunday evening at his Coatesville, New Zealand mansion in order to celebrate the unveiling of his latest endeavor as well as commemorate the one year anniversary of the high-profile arrest that projected him into the international spotlight. On January 20, 2012, over 70 uniformed officers raided Dotcom's home in cooperation with a federal investigation launched by the United States Department of Justice. According to the DoJ, Megaupload existed as a racketeering enterprise that made Dotcom millions by encouraging users to commit copyright infringement and piracy. During the weekend presser, Dotcom said, "the allegations against us are wrong, we are innocent and we will prevail." "Sometimes good things come out of terrible events," said Dotcom. "If it wasn't for the raid, we wouldn't have Mega." As with its precursor, Mega allows users to upload large files to be shared with others around the globe. The main difference this time around, though, is Mega relies on heavy-duty encryption in order to protect the privacy of its customers. "What we are offering is a smarter, faster and more secure way of cloud storage. And we are fully assured buy our legal team that we are in compliance with the law," he said during the event, which was ... |
