(RSF/IFEX) - Reporters Without Borders calls for the release of newspaper editor Milton Chacaguasay Flores, who has completed half of a 10-month sentence for "insulting" a judge and could therefore be freed on good behaviour. The owner and editor of "La Verdad", a weekly based in the south-western city of Machala, Chacaguasay was convicted on appeal on 15 November 2008.

(RSF/IFEX) - Reporters Without Borders hails the Palestinian Authority's release of Ahmed Bikawi, the satellite TV station Al-Quds correspondent in the West Bank city of Jenin, on 12 April 2009. Two other journalists are still being held by the Palestinian Authority.

Mexico - Journalist Andrés Guardiola García-Gómez harassed by local officials in León

(CEPET/IFEX) - Andrés Guardiola García-Gómez, a correspondent for the "Excélsior" newspaper, reported that he has been repeatedly harassed by officials who work for the municipal government in León, Guanajuanto state, in southern Mexico. In the newspaper, which has a national reach, Guardiola García has published information on issues relating to the local government administration, headed by mayor Vicente Guerrero Reynoso, who belongs to the National Action Party (Partido Acción Nacional, PAN). The reports on Guerrero Reynoso's administration included a June 2008 scandal when it was revealed that security force personnel in León were given classes on torture techniques. Another story reported on orders given to demolish a school in order to enlarge a church.

(RSF/IFEX) - Reporters Without Borders is appalled to learn Wasi Ahmed, a newspaper reporter based in Khuzdar, in the southwestern province of Balochistan, died on 16 April 2009 in a Karachi hospital as a result of the injuries he received in a shooting on 11 April. TV reporter Muhammad Khan Adil was injured in a bombing on 10 April in the same province, where tension is high following the murder of three Baloch leaders.
